STEM Superheroes Camp

Looking for a way to engage your community, educate area youth, and give your staff a morale boost, to boot?  Working with youth in your community to educate them about what your utility does each day is a great way to demonstrate the valuable community service your utility provides.

Further, given the “greying workforce” facing our industry, it’s a great way to energize and inspire are youth to consider working in the water industry as a career option.  Job prognosis of the future show that the desirable jobs of tomorrow will require STEM skill sets more than ever before.  Working in the water industry, we already know how valuable these skills are.

By sharing your expertise in STEM with the youth in your community, you are not only providing a valuable educational service, you are investing in the future workforce.

One fun way to do this is through a STEM Superheroes Camp.  The Central States Water Environment Federation Wisconsin section supported an effort at NEW Water, the brand of the Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District.  NEW Water pulled together a curriculum, targeted at 7-11-year-olds, and invited the Boys & Girls Club of Green Bay to join them for an action-packed STEM Superheroes summer camp.

NEW Water has agreed to share the curriculum, logo, and videos with Central States.  At the links below, you will find links to activities – your staff can lead the children in these, and even play the parts of “Superheroes” or Villains!  Some examples are: Commander Clean Water, Sinister Sediment, or Phosphorus Phury.  Your outreach efforts can be as large or small as you like — a few hours, or a few days – it’s up to you!

Activities you might try include:

–          Make your own fluffy slime

–          Typical morning activity

We encourage you to support your local communities – and in so doing, you’re supporting the clean water industry as a whole!

NEW Water has made the schedule and full curriculum available to CSWEA – for more materials, please contact CSWEA.
