Full-Time Chemist

Hiring Salary: $45,483 - $60,643 annually
Schedule: Full-Time 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, on-call, callout and overtime as required

There is one position open at this time.
Responsibilities include:

  • Analyzes raw sewage, influent/effluent, sludge and other samples as outlined by environmental protection regulations and standards
  • Conducts testing for ammonia, suspended solids, pH, and BOD
  • Performs microbiological testing on sludge samples
  • Conducts field sampling of rivers, sewers, and ground water wells as needed
  • Operates laboratory equipment including pH meter, dissolved oxygen meter, spectrophotometer and specific ion electrode in performing analyses
  • Maintains, calibrates, and troubleshoots laboratory equipment
  • Accurately records and validates data on samples following regulations and quality assurance protocols
  • Prepares and maintains routine reports and records
  • Trains and oversees laboratory work of plant operators and temporary help
  • On-call for emergency testing such as storm events

Physical requirements and work environment:

  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and /or up to 25 pounds of force frequently and the use of arm and /or leg controls
  • Employee spends a majority of the time either standing or walking
  • Employees must have the ability to distinguish color
  • The work will occur in an office and field environment, including working with rivers and sewers
  • While performing the duties and responsibilities the employee may be exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations

Requirements include the following experience or equivalent combination of training and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Environmental Sciences
  • Four years of experience as a laboratory technician
  • A valid Illinois Driver's License

The preferred candidate will have:

  • Prior experience with method development, microbiology, and/or water sampling

The Bloomington and Director of Maintenance

Normal Water Reclamation District in Bloomington, IL is seeking a Director of Maintenance. This position is responsible for the management of a staff of 11 which maintains all equipment, facilities, buildings, vehicles and grounds at two wastewater treatment plant sites with a combined 30 mgd rating. This position is under the direction of Executive Director and/or Assistant Executive Director and will work closely with the Operations, Laboratory, Engineering and Finance Departments.

Duties include:
Planning, organizing, and directing both planned preventative maintenance and reactive unplanned maintenance of critical process components so as to ensure compliance with Federal and State requirements. The Maintenance Director assists with the review of Capital Improvement Project Budget, gathers and prepares cost estimates and scope of work for contractors and vendors and develops and administers department budget. He/ She is responsible for record keeping, inventory control, maintenance purchasing. The director Co-ordinates daily operational and maintenance activities, provides department staff supervision, follows and enforces District policy and works with employees to correct deficiencies. Evaluation of District operations, activities and facility status in order to recommend improvements and modifications is expected.

The director is expected to competently maintain and be able to diagnose when needed; stationary pump systems, forced air systems, electrical and electronic systems, lift stations, heavy trucks and equipment, landscaping, and buildings. Knowledge of SCADA systems and their components is important. Principles and practice of safety management and compliance with pertinent laws, ordinances, policies and rules is essential.

Applicant must have a B.S. Degree in Industrial Technology, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or training of equivalent length and technical depth. Ten years of successful employment providing maintenance for electrical and mechanical systems similar to those at the District. Five years of progressively responsible supervisory experience. Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure safe and efficient operation of plant equipment
  • Monitor safe and efficient operation of plant equipment
  • Monitor operations for compliance with applicable EPA standards and regulations
  • Draw samples for laboratory tests and checks lab data and chemical analyses of water
  • Record daily flows to plants, monitors meters and gauges and records readings
  • Perform major and routine maintenance and repairs to equipment as needed
  • Clean buildings, machinery and equipment as needed
  • Supervise the work of summer employees
  • Perform related work as required

Physical requirements and work environment:

  • Ability to regularly stand, walk and use hands and/or arms to operate tools and equipment
  • Ability to work in an environment that regularly includes working near moving mechanical parts, with hazardous chemicals and with fumes or airborne particles

Requirements include the following experience or equivalent combination of training and experience:

  • Completion of one (1) High School level chemistry class and one (1) year of experience in a water treatment plant, pumping station or sewage treatment plant
  • An Illinois Class IV Wastewater Operator's Certificate
  • A valid Illinois Driver's License
  • Ability to obtain a Class "A" CDL within one year of hire

This position is included in the Bargaining Unit of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 399 and will be required to pay a fair share to the union.

Wastewater Field Supervisor

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is currently recruiting for a Wastewater Field Supervisor for our Horicon or Fitchburg Service Center. Additionally, this recruitment process may be used for new vacancies that may occur.

This position will management wastewater programs in an assigned geographic area within the state and will direct the following programs: facility planning, wastewater discharge permits, total maximum daily load implementation, land spreading of industrial waste, calculation of effluent limits and wastewater inspections.

Lead Pump Assembly Position
